The department was started at the time of inception of college in the year 2010 through the pioneering vision of a philanthropist and a social worker Dr.E.M.Abdullah with 33 students and 3 faculties. At present, the department has the total student strength of 165. The department has well equipped and spacious physics laboratory for undergraduate students. All the faculty members of the department have well experience of teaching and they are fervently involving not only to teach subjects but also to inculcate moral values among the students. Spark Seminar is periodically conducted to the students in the presence of faculty members to update their knowledge which also paves the platform for improving their communication skill.

Syed Ammal Arts and Science College is run by the Syed Ammal Educational Trust established by the father of Ramanathapuram Dr.E.M.Abdullah in the name of his beloved mother Syed Ammal. He was a famous doctor, a well-known philanthropist and a social worker. Dr.E.M.Abdullah was deeply interested in nation building activities such as providing medical assistance and uplifting the educational status of the poor and down trodden people of this backward district.
